What is Conservation?
Conservation
“Conservation” describes all of the processes and actions which involve preserving artworks for the future. This includes documentation, examination, treatment, and preventive care.
Restoration
“Restoration” is the act of adding material to an artwork to return it to a previous condition. Inpainting (adding paint where it has been lost) is an example of this type of procedure.
Conservator
“Conservator” is the title of someone who practices the conservation or preservation of fine art or cultural heritage. They usually will have obtained a Masters degree in art conservation, or they may have been trained through apprenticeships. All conservators should follow the American Institute for Conservation’s Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.
